Hemp Black Ink is an environmentally innovative solution for printing. By replacing the traditional black pigment of carbon black with our bio-based Hemp Black carbon, we eliminate petroleum and potentially dangerous fumes, resulting in the protection of our waters and our workers. Hemp acts as a great source of carbon as it sequesters 150% of its mass in CO2, using the carbon as a building block to grow, while releasing fresh, breathable oxygen.
Those unfamiliar with Carbon Black, may know it by its many other names such as furnace black, channel black or lamp black. It is produced from the incomplete combustion of hydrocarbons (think petroleum oil, coal tar, ethylene cracking tar and natural gas). Because this pigment is produced by burning fossil fuels, hazardous emissions are often released into the environment, potentially harming everything it comes in contact with. To make matters worse, the fossil fuels mined and burned to produce this pigment results in greenhouse gasses like CO2 being released into the atmosphere.
While working on our Hemp Black Origin, we discovered that our carbon is a strong black pigment that could be mixed with various bases to create an ink. These bases range from water to plastisol, allowing for versatility of the technology. Most of today's black inks are pigmented using carbon black, making Hemp Black Ink one of the few sustainable alternatives. In fact, our ink even removes 5 kg of CO2 from the atmosphere*.
On top of the great sustainability benefits, our ink has been tested and proven to protect against both types of Ultraviolet light, UVA and UVB. UVA rays penetrate deep into your skin while UVB usually only reaches and burns the surface level of skin. This means it protects you and the planet at the same time!
